Why does Valentine’s Day bring the expectation of a gift? Only a few weeks ago, there was a whole gift-giving season. I guess retailers and card companies want us to “buy into” the hype. I’m not against Valentine’s Day; I just don’t think expressing love should send you scurrying and worrying about a gift. So, my suggestion is:
Try a Gift from the heart this Valentine’s Day
“The #1 predictor for general well-being is not money or prestige but time spent with those who are near and dear to us.”
…There’s no PRESENT like the TIME
The gift of time can be one of the most precious things you can give. This can be done in a variety of ways for all of your loved ones this Valentine’s Day. And, if you can’t celebrate it on the exact day because it’s a workday/weekday, that’s ok. Just make your plans and the date known. Mark the calendar and make it happen.
This can be as simple as a an hour or two together without distractions like phones. How about an indoor picnic, maybe in front of the fireplace? Roast marshmallows and make s’mores for dessert. Cupid may even have other ideas in mind. 😉
Have a game night, playing old favorites like Monopoly and Scrabble, or learning “newer classics” like Catan and Ticket To Ride. And who knows? Game night may become a regular household event.
They may not admit it, but they really do want to spend time with you. Block out time with each child individually doing something that focuses on them, even if that’s just hanging out. Taking a walk, with or without pets, can be great for unhurried, no-pressure conversation.
A phone call to chat with that long distance friend with whom contact has become more and more infrequent. A lunch date with a local friend who needs a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen.
Hand write a card or letter that expresses your appreciation. Name specific things you remember. It’s nice to say “you’re a great dad.” It’s even more heart-warming to say, “You were always at my games cheering for me, and I remember you even took a taxi to get there once when your car broke down.”
