Who are your favorite TV fathers?
TV fathers may be remembered fondly through the lens of childhood and teen years spent watching them. Yet they hold up under the test of time, to remain our favorites. Perhaps even shaping the way we have parented.
For Father’s Day and in honor of fathers everywhere, here are our Top 3 picks.

1. Andy Taylor (The Andy Griffith Show)
Andy Griffith played Sheriff Andy Taylor, raising young Opie alone after his wife died (well, not completely alone…Aunt Bea helped, of course). As a loving father, he was kind and gentle. Whenever he jumped to conclusions, Andy humbly made things right with his son. He modeled, and taught, Opie a high standard of morality and proper behavior. This show from the 1960s still resonates, and the humor is timeless.
2. Charles Ingalls (Little House on the Prairie)
Michael Landon played the role of Charles Ingalls from 1974-1983, in this show loosely based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Totally devoted to loving, providing for and protecting his family, Charles, along with wife Carolyn, raised daughters on the frontier. He had a can-do attitude, able to build or fix anything, and Solomon-like wisdom dispensed with warmth and often a twinkle of the eye.
3. Howard Cunningham (Happy Days)
Played by Tom Bosley, Howard Cunningham owned and operated a hardware store. He always seemed to have time to be a part of his kids’ lives and regularly offered solid fatherly wisdom to them as well as their friends. Though sometimes at odds, it was clear that father and kids loved and respected each other. And Howard and Marion’s home was always open to any kids who happened to show up.
Are these TV fathers realistic?
Yes and no. The good qualities of these TV fathers do exist in real fathers today. However, we all know real life is a lot trickier than what can be solved in one TV episode.
So, as parents, we can choose to make the most of each day and opportunity.
Take time. Enjoy life with those you love. Make memories. Have talks. Be there. You won’t regret it.
